Cinquofil (Potentilla) is a genus of plants with over 300 species native to Europe, Scandinavia, West Asia and East North America. Historically, Cinquefoil Herb has been utilized in traditional medicine by the Chinese and Native Americans of North America, as well as in medieval Europe. Cinquefoil was traditionally used medicinally as a natural astringent to alleviate symptoms of diarrhea, dysentery, heal wounds, sores, ulcers, bruises and stop nose bleeds. As a decoction it was used to alleviate disorders like fever and gargled to relieve sore throats and toothaches. The Iroquois ground the roots for ingestion to treat diarrhea, while a decoction of leaves and stems was applied topically to address inflammation in the body and joints. Additionally, the Natchez who lived in the Lower Mississippi Valley employed this plant as a remedy to break spells. In TCM, it is considered a "heat-clearing" and detoxifying herb- it is used to remove heat toxins, heat in the blood and relieve dysentery. In Korea, it is used to alleviate fevers and used as a women's tonic.
