Gotu Kola is an herb in the parsley family that likes to grow in tropical swamps. Sources suggest it may have travelled from Africa via Madagascar to India where it is known as Brahmi. Gotu Kola has been used to treat many conditions for thousands of years in India, China, and Indonesia, where it's particularly valued for its ability to help impart a long life and to improve mental health in terms of enhancing memory, concentration and cognitive function. In Ayurveda it is regarded as one of the most spiritual of all herbs. Additionally, Gotu Kola has been used to treat wounds, stomach ulcers, mental fatigue, epilepsy, diarrhea, fever respiratory infections, such as colds. Gotu kola’s ancient use is recorded in the Chinese ShennongHerbal (1st 2nd century CE) and it's regarded as "the fountain of life" because legend has it that an ancient Chinese herbalist lived for more than 200 years as a result of taking gotu kola. Gotu kola’s positive effect on brain function may also make it an effective antidepressant and stress reducer.
Traditionally for wound healing modern research has been increasingly supportive for these claims. Gotu Kola is said to rejuvenate the skin and body, stimulating collagen production and tissue growth. It's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties also used to improve skins conditions including cellulite and eczema.
It is commonly eaten as a salad green, eaten raw and sold as fresh juice in many Asian countries. Rich in nutrients, gotu kola is a nourishing plant that is sweet and bitter in flavor and is often eaten in a variety of Asian dishes
Not be confused with Bacopa monnieri which carry similar properties. Gotu kola is not the same as kola nut (Cola nitida). Unlike kola nut, gotu kola does not have caffeine, and is not a stimulant.
