Botanical Name: Cinchona officinalis

Common Names: Peruvian Bark, Jesuit’s Bark

Folk Name:  Quina, Fever Tree, Ten Bark

Magical Folk Uses: spiritual warding; repels parasitic spirits and prevent energy depletion. Aura Cooling: Used in baths to draw out spiritual heat, calming anger, agitation, and nightmares. Carried to sharpen the mind for business and shield the bearer from envy or the evil eye.

Medicinal Folk Uses: The Quechua people introduced cinchona bark as a remedy for cyclical fevers and chills long before the development of modern pharmacology. Its ability to interrupt recurring fever patterns later transformed the treatment of intermittent fevers, including those identified as malaria.

Traditionally, cinchona was used to “break the ague,” reducing intense chills, sweating, and elevated body temperature. Classified as a powerful bitter tonic, it was also employed to stimulate appetite and digestion in cases of digestive weakness and post-illness debility, though always with caution due to its strength.

In historical herbal practice, cinchona was used to support recovery after prolonged illness, address muscle cramps and tremors, and reduce spleen enlargement associated with chronic fevers. Externally, strong preparations of the bark were applied as an astringent wash for slow-healing wounds and skin infections.

In later medical history, isolated alkaloids from cinchona—such as quinidine—were used in controlled clinical settings, reflecting its potency and the need for precise dosing.

Traditional Decoction (Internal Use)
Cinchona bark is traditionally prepared as a decoction, not an infusion.

  • Use a very small amount of cut bark
  • Simmer gently in water for 15–30 minutes
  • Strain before use

Important Notes

Due to its potency, cinchona was historically taken in small, short-term doses only and not used continuously.
Cinchona bark is extremely bitter and highly active. It is not intended for frequent or casual use and should be avoided by those sensitive to quinine-containing plants.
