Botanical Name: Mikania guaco

Common Names: Vejuco de Guaco, Hempvine

Folk Name: Guaco. Guaco earned its name from the Quechua word "huaco" or "guaco", associated with snakes.

Magickal Folk Uses: Traditionally used to counteract ingested witchcraft and clear internal spiritual blockages. In Candomblé, Guaco is sacred to Oxóssi, orisha of the forest and herbal wisdom, honored for its wild origin and power to open the breath. In Lucumí/Santería, it is associated with Osain, the orisha who governs all plants and their mysteries. Guaco is also linked to the La Madama spirits, who are renowned for their mastery of rootwork and herbal healing—especially in matters of protection, purification, and restoring health where illness is spiritually rooted.

Medicinal Folk Uses:

  • Supports the lungs and chest; used as an expectorant and bronchodilator to ease coughs, asthma, bronchitis, and respiratory congestion.
  • Used to reduce fevers, especially in the context of malaria or typhoid-like fevers.
  • Taken as a seasonal internal cleanser to promote balance and vitality.
Applied externally for snake bites and wounds to draw out venom and protect against infection.

By the 19th century, guaco was recognized in Brazilian pharmacopeias. It contains coumarin, a compound known for mild anticoagulant and smooth muscle relaxant effects—likely contributing to its bronchodilator activity.
