Botanical Name: Verbascum thapsus

Common Names:  Great Mullein, Velvet plant, White mullein, Bullock's Lungwort Shepherd's club, Hare's Ceard, Cow's Lungwort, and Candlewick Plant, which refers to the old practice of using the dried down of mullein leaves and stems to make lamp wicks.

Folk Name:  “Hag’s Tapers”

Magical Folk Uses:  Instils courage; wards off evil spirits;  protection from wild animals; love drawing; wards against nightmares and negativity; divination; used as a substitute for graveyard dirt. It was believed that wearing mullein would ensure fertility. 

Medicinal Folk Uses:  Historically used to treat a wide range of respiratory and upper airway ailments in both humans and livestock.  These include coughs, sore throat, bronchitis, COPD and asthma. The Navajos would smoke the the roots or dried leaves  to treat asthma.  The root was made into a necklace for teething infants by the Abnaki tribe. Applied topically, mullein is said to relieve, skin/eye inflammation, rashes, aide in scorpion stings.  The powder roots are used to treat athlete's foot

The leaves contain a substance known as mucilage, which is believed to be the main constituent that helps to loosen phlegm in the airways of the lungs. 

Modern research supports various biological and pharmacological properties, including antiviral, antioxidant, antifungal, and anticancer activities. 

Tea is made by steeping 2–3 teaspoons (10–15 grams) in 1 cup (250 ml) of hot water for ten to fifteen minutes.
