Botanical Name: Mentha pulegium

Common Names: European Pennyroyal, Hilwort, Pudding grass, Mosquito Plant, Squaw Mint

Folk Name: Pennyroyal, Tickweed

Magical Folk Uses:  Strength, protection, peace, reversal workings

Medicinal Folk Uses: Pennyroyal plant has also been used as an emmenagogue (herbs stimulate blood flow in the pelvic area and uterus; some stimulate menstruation) and an abortifacient (which causes a miscarriage). Compounds in the pennyroyal plant cause the uterine lining to contract, causing a woman's uterine lining to shed. Women who struggle with regulating their menstrual cycle or suffer from cystic ovary syndrome may drink pennyroyal tea. Pennyroyal tea induces menstrual flow with minimal negative health effects. Pennyroyal was traditionally consumed as a tea for digestive concerns, as well as coughs, congestion, and other respiratory issues; externally, used to ease skin diseases, wounds, insect bites.  It is also renowned as a strong insect repellent, used to combat external parasitic infestations such as fleas, mosquitos, and lice in both humans and pets.  Pets' flea collars can contain pennyroyal oil, or crushed herb in lining. Humans can also use crushed stems as a repellent. But, avoid concentrated oil; it's toxic to humans/animals in small amounts.

Pennyroyal tea should be consumed periodically, as it is taxing on the body. Not for regular use. Can be fatal for infants/children. High doses can cause abortion. Not recommended for pregnant women.

Tea is made by steeping (5–grams) of the herb in 1 cup (250 ml) of hot water for ten to fifteen minutes.
